No party this year, life was just too hectic for that. I’m lucky I even got to watch every single vid! I almost thought I wouldn’t get to. I’m very sad to hear that next year will be the last Vividcon! I have loved this con for almost a decade (even though I only attended once) and there will be a true void when it’s over. I’m not linking each vid title to the vid post this year, instead click on the link for the vid show and if a download link is available you can get it there. Also, again I just didn’t have time to be as comprehensive as I used to be with this. There are lots more great vids shown than I’ve recorded here. Presented in the order that I watched the shows.

You can see all the vids shown at this year’s con, and all years, here: http://vividcon.info/ Each of the vid shows is listed below in bold, and you can easily find them at the above link.
*Denotes vids that I’m really excited about

Premiers
Battleflag by Gwyneth | Star Wars

*Monsters of the cosmos by CherryIce | Thor
I really loved this! It was so different as an audio source, and I loved that it was all sciency for Dr. Foster.

Spell by Hollywoodgrrl | Carol
Interesting period piece that also has a lesbian relationship – even though the relationship seems to be the typical doomed thing. But it looks like there is more to it than that, and I’m interested…

Handclap by elipie & kuwdora | Power Rangers
This looked pretty cool! I’ve added it to my Netflix list even though part of me is going “……Power Rangers????”

She Keeps Me Warm by kiki_miserychic | Inside Out
Really sweet, poignant vid that made me want to watch the movie.

Clean Light by skygiants | Steven Universe
I’ve never seen this show, but the vid was all about friends as found family and I loved it.

Stray Italian Greyhound by Butterfly | Yuri!!! On Ice
Finally I get to see a bit about this show! I really enjoyed this, and totally see why fandom has embraced it.

White Flag by Trelkez | Timeless
Looks like an awesome ensemble show with time travel!

Incredible Thoughts by pipsqueaky | Multi
Ha, a bizarre, awesome vid about Keanu Reeves.

This Is a Trent Rezner Song by rhoboat | Star Trek AOS
A fun vid that satirizes the seriousness of the Trek franchise through the new movies.

Wake Me Up Before You Go by sisabet | New Girl
Looks like a fun RomCom.

Everything Stops For Tea by Valoise | Multi
There’s lots of tea in fandom!

Shape of You by Butterfly | Multi
Lots of fun queer relationships.

*Wolves Without Teeth by Dar | Sense8
Awesome vid for Sense8, I’ve really got to finish this season.

Overcome by sweetestdrain | Star Wars Rogue One
Poignant look at the crew that made the destruction of the Death Star possible.

*Carry That Weight by Anoel | Star Wars
The women of Star Wars, and how representation has been a long time coming. Awesome and inspiring.

Welcome to Vividcon
Mood Swinging Man by Jill and Kay | X-Files
Interesting and moody x-files vid.

That's All by SDWolfpup | Highlander
Really good and interesting early After Effects digital manipulation work. I was impressed!

Auction
That's What's the Matter by Grammarwoman | Star Wars
Lol a funny look at the Star Wars series.

Blackbird by sweetestdrain | Harry Potter
Lovely, melancholic song for the quiet strength of professor McGonagall and the other characters through difficult times.

So much due South already in the con!

Cosplay
A lot of great creativity in this show. It was neat to see how some were more traditional music video type things, and others were more traditional vid type things with a narrative. I had never heard of cosplay music videos so this was a great introduction.

Fantasy Boyfriends! (How to Be a Heartbreaker – Free! Cosplay MV Parody) by o0Lemon0o | Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Fun little vid.

Say Something by Lume Cosplay | Attack on Titan
Really interesting combination of 'singing' and action shots.

Emperor's New Clothes by Victor Lockhart | Black Butler
Kinda creepy and well done. I'm curious about the shot at the end that looked like the same person on the screen twice, and how they did that.

Accidentally In Love by Buddy Cosplay | Naruto
So cute!

Party Like a Russian by Rintamasunnta | Yuri!!! On Ice
Very cool skating and professional-looking camera work.

Genghis Khan! By NyxRising Industries | Hannibal
I absolutely don't watch Hannibal, but I was intrigued by the 'comedy' tag on this and it did indeed make me grin. Go figure. I guess that's why they say the fandom is WAY different than the source material.

Go Long
*Expo by lim | Iron Man
Oooooooo I love this as a character study of Tony! I still really enjoy the first Iron Man and Tony as a character, and this vid just dug deep into him. The pace was excellent throughout and didn't feel long.

*Some Time Around Midnight by bop_radar | Battlestar Galactica (2003)
An excellent look at Lee and the Starbuck/Apollo relationship. It gave me feels, and I haven't had feels for that show in a while. It’s funny, I would definitely have been an OT3 shipper for Anders/Kara/Lee had I seen this show five years after I did. As it was, I could never decide and really wanted her to be with both but didn’t know that was a thing. Now I’m somewhere between shipping her with either man depending on what I’m watching/reading at the time, and shipping the OT3. Once I have an initial OTP/3 developed it's often hard to move me off of it.

Club Vivid
Telephone by One Hour Vid Team | Multi
Fun dancing.

Move Your Body by kuwdora | Fate of the Furious
A little spoilery since I haven’t seen the movie, but fun and makes me want to see it.

*I Ship It by Grammarwoman | Multi
Ahah I love it! Love the song, love that she included several of my ships.

Weird People by Anoel | Fandom
Fandom is weird, and I love it.

Bad Girl by Kitty | K-POP: Trouble Maker
Fun dancing.

*Light ‘Em Up by bessyboo | Ghostbusters (2016)
Awesome vid!

*Chase You Down by Gwyneth | Captain America
Steve, and the people he loves.

Ready Steady Go by M’lyn and Gwyneth | Multi
Fun car chases.

Filthy Mind by SE | Multi
Dancing and danger. Always excellent.

There Is a Light That Never Goes Out by ohvienna | Star Wars
Fun dance song, except there’s more going on with Star Wars than just fun explosions and this vid captures that.

I’m Not a Virgin Anymore by Luminosity | Highlander
As always, I’m captivated by a Highlander vid despite never having seen the show. This makes it look very exciting. :D

Ex’s and Oh’s by Roarkshop | Supernatural
Still fun!

Do My Thing by Laura Shapire | The Heat
Also still fun every time!

Warning: Might Lead to Mixed Dancing by seekingferret | Multi
Interesting compilation of lots of fantastic Jewish characters dancing.

Live In This City by heresluck | Ghostbusters (2016)
Fun ghostbusters vid!

Around the Bend by Danegen | Multi
Ladies goin' fast. What's not to love?

*Worth It by Rhea314 | Multi
Ladies over 50 are worth it. Loved it.

Goin' Down For Real by Anoel | Multi
Always sexy lesbians.

M.I.L.F $ by Moon | Carol
Interesting looking lesbian movie.

Bizarre Love Triangle by rhoboat | Deadpool
Fun Deadpool vid.

Tubthumping by sisabet and Trelkez | Thor
Fun song for Thor, I smiled.

Sweet Sweet Love
Skinny Genes by Charmax | Rizzoli & Isles
Made me miss Rizzoli & Isles

Be My Yoko Ono by Dayln | Stargate Atlantis
Made me smile. Love these boys always. <3

King of Anything by Cappy | Coffee Prince
As always, this vid gives me feels for a show I've never seen. So excellent.

One Voice by cosmic_llin | Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
I haven't seen much Deep Space Nine, so this vid was very intriguing. It looked like a happy poly family on the show, and I really hope that's what it is! It was a sweet vid.

Come and Find Me by chaila | Imagine Me & You
Oooo interesting looking lesbian movie! I hope it's as sweet as the vid looks.

*When You Were Young violace | Captain America
Touching Steve/Bucky vid that gave me feels.

I Wanna Dance by jarrow | Glee
Tons of fun dancing, and the lesbian couple from Glee! I never watched the show so I don't know much about the couple, but the vid was really cute and made me smile.

Vidding As Poetry
*Orono Flow (Data's Dream) by FG aka Gayle, ShadowSongs and Tashery | Multi
Really cool look at sailing over many fandoms. Spoiler! I didn't read the vid title before watching so I was surprised by the ending. It was really cool to think of it all as a digital dream by Data, though I haven't seen that episode so I don't know if that reading is correct.

Let's Play a Game by pingvi | Multi
Interesting little tidbit of visuals.

Moonlight by bradcpu | Sleepy Hollow
Very atmospheric vid for a show I have enjoyed.

*The Tree by newkidfan | Stargate Atlantis
I have loved this vid since I saw it almost a decade ago, and it's still stunning. It is truly visual poetry. It's one of the first McShep vids I ever saw and it was formative for my view of their relationship. I haven't thought about it in a while but I'm so glad to see it here.

*Flow by lim | Multi
I'm not sure what to say about this vid. Both "flow" and "visual poetry" are accurate phrases to use, but it seems to be somehow so much more. The vid pinged something in me the first time I watched it, and again when watching this year's stream, but I don't know how to describe it. It's just a really penetrating vid for me.

Paradise Lost by En Quatre | Shinsekai Yori
Pretty, sad, emotional vid.

Keep Your Picture Clear by obsessive24 | House of Cards
A great visual look at some (I think) grey characters (but I haven't seen the show).

Journey by SDWolfpup | Journey
Great choice for this vid show, beautiful visuals and editing.

Boom Boom Ba by Charmax | Xena: Warrior Princess
Another vid I have loved for almost a decade, and an excellent choice for this show.

Vividcon Rare Cuts
Fashion Is Danger by valoise | Star Trek: The Original Series
All the good and LOLtastic costumes of Star Trek TOS.

Fragile by Eunice and Myrtle | Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The fragile difficulty of life in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight by Luminosity | Ancient Aliens
Cracktastic, befitting the series itself.

Challenge: Resistance
Something Wicked by Dar | Harry Potter
One of the few vids I've seen set to classical music. Very dramatic, good use of the highs and lows of the song.

Trouble by sweetestdrain | Star Wars films
Nice look at Lando, he doesn't get a lot of exposure.

She's a Rebel by bessyboo | Star Wars
The awesomeness that is Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher.

Inspiration
Come On by Gwyneth | Flashpoint
Interesting mix of humor and drama. Made me curious to watch the show.

Landsailer by skygiants | The Legend of Korra
Cool vid for Legend of Kora. Makes me curious to watch it.

Give It Up by jarrow | Multi
Great multi 80's movies vid.

Vividcon Classic: Big Emotion (2011)
Dante's Prayer by Killa and WOAD Society | Star Trek TOS
Powerful and touching. A classic Kirk and Spock vid for a reason. Gave me feels.

Give It Up by Jarrow | Multi
So much dancing fun!

What a Good Boy by Gianduja Kiss | Young Americans
Looks like an interesting show, particularly the bits with Ian Somerholder. Makes me interested to watch.

Dreams by Eunice | Marley & Me
Damn, what a way to finish out this show! I've never seen this movie, but the vid made me cry

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2010-07-11:530844:652472016 Vividcon Vid Recs2016-09-28T18:44:25Z2016-09-28T18:44:25Zpublic4It’s Vividcon time again! I had another party again this year, though it was a little smaller than last year with way less food – I just ordered pizza this time. Having a baby means I have a lot less time for stuff like that. But I was excited to still have the party! I’m not linking each vid title to the vid post this year, instead click on the link for the vid show and if a download link is available you can get it there. Also, I watched Club Vivid and Premiers last. By the time I got to those shows I was pressed for time so I didn’t make as many notes for the vids I liked. I just didn’t have time to be as comprehensive as last time. There are lots more great vids shown than I’ve recorded here.

You can see all the vids shown at this year’s con, and all years, here: http://vividcon.info/
+Denotes vids shown at my party.
*Denotes vids that I’m really excited about
( Read more... )

New Frontier by here’s luck | Firefly
Beautiful use of motion, good look at Mal and River through the series.

Auction: http://vividcon.info/vidshows/260/

/Boom, Bang, Bang by banbury | Fast and Furious movies
Nice use of clips of Brien fixing the car to the lyrics “You’re going to get it tonight.” Fun vid.

Wish You Were Here: http://vividcon.info/vidshows/269/

Touch the Sky by Llin | Multi fandom
Lovely look at girls doing things and having adventures. This book is on my To Read list and I’d be interested to rewatch the vid after reading the book to see how the vidder did.

/Trailer for Drastically Redefining Protocol by Zoetrope | Merlin
Great trailer for rageprufrock’s story! I loved the use of RL paparazzi footage for the “fictional footage” of the story. And the newspaper and TV manips were brilliant!

Grisha Trilogy by CarolynOnUTube | The Grisha Trilogy
I’m very intrigued about the story now. Very sharp and beautiful vid.

Written By The Victors – Vid by zulu | Stargate Atlantis
An excellent vid for an amazing fic by Speranza, a fic I still occasionally re-read.

+The Marauders by fakescottishaccent | Harry Potter
I don’t really know anything about Marauder era HP, but this vid made me really curious about it.

Cinder: The Lunar Chronicles || The Future Will Destroy You (FAN-BOOK TRAILER) by Rinoa | The Lunar Chronicles
That looked really cool, and it’s a book I already want to read.

+“Ancillary Justice” book trailer by bironic | Imperial Radch trilogy (multi)
I can’t tell it it’s all footage from the same movie, it’s edited that seamlessly. It grew into a monster rec list - I don't know if I'll ever do a list this comprehensive again! But I think most of you may find at least a couple of interesting things to watch. If you love vids it’s worth the $40 yearly fee so you can stream everything (including some stuff that isn’t up online!) and get a DVD of some of the new vids.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2010-07-11:530844:56603Book Club and Fanfic Recs2014-07-18T18:46:24Z2014-07-18T20:08:59Zpublic0A while back I requested fanfic recs for my bookclub book choice. It also includes stuff from the comics, but I don't think you need knowledge of the comics to enjoy the story.

“This is possibly the most articulately adult, mature, rational, and believable fic I have ever read.
I am so intrigued by the slow build of crime/thriller elements, the artful way you threw in the politics of agencies and made steve NOT. DUMB. but in a rational way without being bound by hyperbole emotions.
Also the perfect balance of the avengers being a decent team but also having their own lives- as a group of people in their 30's-40's is wont to do. LOVE. IT.I feel like i'm reading a sydney sheldon novel with how believable your male leads are in action and thought, and how matter-of-fact your female leads are.
The military life details and understandings are EXCELLENT. I am engaged to an airforce engineer and I truly appreciate that you have given this facet of steve's life depth, insight, and details!” – Elemenohp

“Breathtakingly done. Thank you for writing such a fantastic, immersive, engrossing story with a layer of realism you rarely find in the canon works, nevermind the fanfiction. I've been enthralled with this since I started it, and have been reading as voraciously as my schedule would allow. You do good work.” – PrimaryFeather

“Wow, that was seriously epic. Loved all the day-to-day details of Steve situating himself in the "now," with the food details (OMG, totally drooling over all the food descriptions) and picking up art again. You write great characters - loved all the team interaction, the insight into Natasha and Bruce, Tony and the way different people react to him - all very believable and honest. Loved your OCs as well (um, I think they're OC's; I'm not well versed on the comics), and all the bureaucratic/ military hierarchy details came though very well. Thank you for sharing this!” – joyouslee

“I am really enjoying the MCU but have never read any of the comics (don't get on with the media), so I suspect there are lots of references I'm missing, but conversely there is undoubtedly benefit in being able to be surprised by what happens next more so than I might otherwise be.
Your writing is always like catnip to me, I always end up more invested in your characters(/characterisations) and universes than the source materiel. As always, I am in love with your characterisation, your long and wonderfully plotty story arc, the funny, the accuracy and realism you bring; you have this knack for lots of detail without unnecessary exposition, and, particularly in the more person centred scenes, leaving just the right amount up to the reader's imagination, and that brevity always seem to pack a more powerful punch.” – vonknibble

“Wow, this was without a doubt the most ambitious, amazing, detailed and awesome story I have ever read in Avengers fandom. It took me ages to get through (which is a good thing!!) and I don't even know what to flail most about. The whole thing is simple awe-inspiring. Thanks so much for writing and sharing it.” – pulangaraw

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">A Place Where We Only Say Goodbye by weezly14 | Dr. Who | 59,486 words, ~245 pages | Angst, Romance

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">""And I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never have lain beside at all." He's served Rose Tyler coffee almost every day for a year, but he's never worked up the courage to really talk to her. This is called an Alternate Universe - in this case it's a Coffee Shop AU, which is a common fanfic trope. It's a great way to get into a new fandom if you haven't watched the show because you don’t need any knowledge of the show to understand the plot of the story, as is the case for this fic. The 'Angst' tag is often used for situations of emotional difficulty. If you're interested in checking out the characters you can watch Dr. Who 2006 (Season/Series2) on Amazon Prime, iTunes, or Netflix - a good one to start with might be School Reunion. Runtime for each episode is about 45 minutes.

"God, I am so in love with this verse. And I'm going to be that person who'll suggest you just go right ahead and sell this to publishers. Get an editor, an agent, anyone. Because if something like Twilight or 50 Shades or Mortal Instruments got published, I don't see why the hell this can't. Because the premise, the pacing, the characterizations... as a fellow writer and storyteller, I am just so, so in love with this.
At one point, I was reminded of Audrey Niffenegger's book, The Time Traveler's Wife. I know that the plots are quite different, but this story has encouraged a similar level of emotional attachment to the protagonists as with that book. I do not doubt for a moment that if you let someone who has not even heard of Doctor Who or the term 'fanfiction' read this, it would still be much appreciated. I could go on and on, but let me just end it with a thank you. Thank you for giving us this absolutely wonderful story. Great original characters too.” – Mari83

“An excellent tale, well told. I thought you did a good job of providing a realistic journey for Dudley to choose to step up instead of passively fading away. I like that you ended with hope and that you didn't brush away the aftershocks of the war and the cultural divides as if everything would go back to just fine after Voldemort was dead. All in all, thank you for writing!” – Phoenix Flight

“Great story. Dudley's journey just fits - no hurried redemption, no overdose of angst, a good, logical mix of drama and evolving characters.” – Starfox5

“Great story! I loved the format you used with news articles at the end of each chapter. And the final one - Molly's article was a perfect ending to the story, put the message of the whole fic into perspective. You are so right about Dudley's "side character" status, which is not only limited to canon. Even in the HP fanfic community, his story is rarely explored and his character seldom a protagonist. So bravo! Great fic all-around!” – Inexplicably Waiting

“I have not read such fanfiction in a very long time. Incredible portrayal of characters. Dudley's transformation from Big D was the in-depth reveal that I always wanted from jkr. And making him a werewolf? Clever. I also loved how you let readers learn what happened to other characters though Dudley did not realize the significance. Very well done. I will be keeping my eyes open for new posts!” – bloombaby26

“I was lucky enough to stumble across your story today and got to read it all at once. It was heartbreaking and warming all at once.
Your characters didn't pull a deus ex machina and make everything perfect at the end or "magically" make everything better by getting involved, but they did make a difference by moving past apathy and taking action.
You showed Percy finding the cause he was looking for. Loose ends that bothered me in the books were neatly wrapped up or proved to not be loose ends at all. And, quite importantly, Dudley found a new normal. That's not an insignificant achievement.” – Code Aster

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">An Avalanche Of Detour Signs by gyzym | Sherlock (TV) | 56,053 Words, ~267 pages | Romance, Sexual Trauma

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">In which Molly Hooper gets a job, gets a degree, breaks a heart, has her heart broken, falls in love, keeps a secret, saves a life, runs a morgue, falls apart, pulls it together, and finds exactly what she didn't know she was looking for--not necessarily in that order.
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; background-color: transparent;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";" class="yiv1176807129ms__id3674">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";">**Fanfic gives minor characters, particularly women in this case, a lot more life than they are given onscreen. An audiobook version of this story is available here, recorded by magicranberries.
