Vividcon time again! No party this year, life was just too hectic for that. I’m lucky I even got to watch every single vid! I almost thought I wouldn’t get to. I’m very sad to hear that next year will be the last Vividcon! I have loved this con for almost a decade (even though I only attended once) and there will be a true void when it’s over. Oooooooo I love this as a character study of Tony! I still really enjoy the first Iron Man and Tony as a character, and this vid just dug deep into him. The pace was excellent throughout and didn't feel long.

An excellent look at Lee and the Starbuck/Apollo relationship. It gave me feels, and I haven't had feels for that show in a while. It’s funny, I would definitely have been an OT3 shipper for Anders/Kara/Lee had I seen this show five years after I did. As it was, I could never decide and really wanted her to be with both but didn’t know that was a thing. Now I’m somewhere between shipping her with either man depending on what I’m watching/reading at the time, and shipping the OT3.  Once I have an initial OTP/3 developed it's often hard to move me off of it.

I'm not sure what to say about this vid. Both "flow" and "visual poetry" are accurate phrases to use, but it seems to be somehow so much more. I had a Vividcon viewing party at my house again this year and I thought it would be cool to make a list of all the vids I showed at the party, and the others that I really liked but didn't have time to show. It grew into a monster rec list - I don't know if I'll ever do a list this comprehensive again! But I think most of you may find at least a couple of interesting things to watch. If you love vids it’s worth the $40 yearly fee so you can stream everything (including some stuff that isn’t up online!) and get a DVD of some of the new vids.

This morning I saw in a Retweet that @cee_m was requesting recs for fave AU or Constructed Reality vids, and I felt like obliging.  It's been a while since I did a vid rec post.  It got too big for a tweet though, so here's a post with recs.  :)  I'm going by the definition here at Fanlore: A constructed reality vid recontextualizes footage from the source (and sometimes footage from outside sources) in order to tell a story that did not happen in canon. ^[1]   I really wanted to include some Trek vids that combine AOS/TOS footage, but felt in the end that didn't count as outside footage, or excessive manipulation of the source.  However, I did include shipper vids that use manips and outside footage to sell the ship, since I feel that counts.  So, my recs:

An amazing AU in which Castiel is an assassin and Sam and Dean are the FBI agents hunting him down.

I Want You by Maichan2, Sam/Dean
I love the way Maichan manipulates the footage to make it look like the boys are having an actual conversation about their relationship, with Sam asking and Dean saying no, until he gives in. Maichan actually makes a super-hot 'make the boys do it' type vid into a realistic study of their relationship and how Dean would respond to Sam's requests.  I very nearly put all of Maichan's Sam/Dean vids in this list, but I decided to pick just one since they are all pretty similar.  It was hard to pick.

Jack's made up his mind, he's keeping his baby.  This is the most adorable and squeeful thing ever.
 

X-Men: First Class

Gorgeous, gorgeous use of many different sources to create a relationship through the centuries.  Maichan says "Basically, this vid is an excuse for boys in cravats, suits, and uniforms."

First: a drabble.  A little morning-after Urbine, by me.

Chris woke up the next morning with one leg tangled up between Karl’s knees and an arm half under Karl’s shoulder. He tipped his head to the side to look at the man in his bed. Karl’s face was smushed into the pillow, his hair sticking up every which way. The morning sun shone through the blinds and illuminated the golden curve of his shoulder and cheekbone.

Chris let out a shuttering breath and rolled a bit until he was curled up facing Karl, fingers trailing across bare skin.

Karl hmmmed a little, then opened one eye. “Morning,” he whispered.

LOL, whew, now I can stop worrying about it.  I know some of you are sick of hearing about it!  Anyway, I've not been doing anything productive on the internets for a while now, but there are a few things that I've enjoyed lately that I wanted to share.

First, I have no idea what the proper etiquette for pimping works that you've beta'd is, but I'm gonna do it anyway because it's an awesome fic!  (And my beta efforts were mostly "OMG, I LOVE IT!" and she did all the work, so it hardly counts as betaing, lol): 

Roll Away Your Stone, I'll Roll Away Mine by thalialunacy , Star Trek 2009, Kirk/McCoy, NC-17
You guys, I just love everything about this fic.  Seriously, I can't even really tell you all the things I love without writing a book about it.  Which I did, and sent to Thalia, but I don't think ya'll want to read it too.  So I'll shorten it to a few bullet points:

• I love the way she plays with the accepted fannish characterizations for the boys with this fic.  It's smart and refreshing, and I loved it.
• The whole damn thing is smart.  I mean, the dialog, the way she uses fannish cliches, the way she weaves their backstory in, everything.  She makes leaps and expects us to be able to follow, and it works.
• Stuff like...  Oh hell, I can't even quote anything because every sentence is loaded, and quoting anything will give something away.  Just know that I love her descriptive language.

Coming Closer by colls :  Pretty, angsty Karl from DOOM!  The vidder really made great use of the footage, I think.  And, it's Karl's pretty face.  What's not to love?

Common Knowledge by elucreh : J2 RPS, R (Maybe NC-17?), characters discover fanfic
Summary: Jared, your fangirls. Fangirls, I believe you already know Jared. Better than he knows himself.
This is so funny, and so damn cute!  It's one of the best "characters discover fanfic" fics I've read.  And even though there aren't many of those, this one is still amazing.  Plus, it celebrates the SPN/J2 fan, and fandom in general, and it made me squeeful to read it.

This video has made me laugh several times over the last week.  YOU ARE NOT YOUR GLITTERY EYE MAKEUP!!

I've been sitting on these recs for a while now, and I figured that I ought to just post them. So, a bunch of vids that have delighted me lately.


Sleeping With Ghosts by butterfly , Star Trek 2009 and TOS:
Hush It's OK / Dry your eyes / Soulmate dry your eyes / Cause soulmates never die.
This is a really beautiful Kirk/Spock vid that combines footage from TOS and Reboot to show their deep and eternal love. Not only do they get a relationship in TOS, but they are fated to be together in the Reboot timeline because soulmates never die. Really touching, and it reminds me why Kirk/Spock is such an enduring pairing.

When the Sun Goes Down by buffyann , Queer as Folk:
Gorgeous boys, gorgeous editing and gorgeous source make for one gorgeous vid. The use of motion in this is so perfect, the vid just flows and grooves and *works*. And the boys! This vid makes a strong argument for watching QAF. This is so extremely well done that I can’t really say anything else except GO WATCH IT.

Red by obsessive24 , Merlin:
Come as you are sweetheart, come as you are / You know you've got nothing to prove. Gorgeous vid for Arthur/Merlin. Arthur is a tragic hero, and Merlin loves him anyway. This was the first Merlin vid I saw, and just from watching it I totally get and ship Arthur/Merlin.

OMG, does Merlin seriously want to make it with *everyone*, or is the vidder just that awesome? She did a fantastic job making him the desperate slut of Camelot.

Gorgeous, sparkley Adam in all his dancing and singing glory! I just got so much squee and joy from this, it had to be recced. She’s also written a ton of Idol RPS that I’m loving and will have to rec.

Heaven Is A Place On Earth by rhoboat  , Supernatural:
OMG crack SPN! It’s Dean/Castiel set to stadium rock! I totally loved it, every gorgeous, absurd bit. I still haven’t gotten up the nerve to watch the show (yeah, I’m a wuss) but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the pretty! Plus, I’m really liking Misha Collins. His Twitter is hilarious, and then there is this video of him, Jared and Jensen at a convention that made me go o.0 SRSLY?!?. Nuff said.  (The second picture on that page is from that video, but the actual video is twords the bottom of the post with the other videos of Misha and J2)

Fun vid about all the buddy shows we love. In particular I enjoyed the SGA and Psych parts.

Star Trek 2009 has totally taken over my fannish life.  It's all I read, and watch, lately, so I thought I'd share some of the best I've come across.  Star Trek fandom has exploded, though, so this list is in no way complete for the fantastic stuff out there.

Right after seeing the movie I fell hard for Spock/Uhura.  Their relationship was so touching onscreen that I just had to experience more.  The spock_uhura  comm is huge, and full of fic, vids and art for the pairing.

Speaking In Tongues by monimala, Probably hard R:  This was the first fic I read for them and it was fantastic.  It's Uhura's POV, how they start their relationship.  She got Uhura's internal voice spot-on, and the sex was hot as hell too.  (Part 2-ponn farr fic!, part 3)

Boundaries and Discipline by taraljc, G and PG-13:  A couple of short fics about Uhura and Spock's relationship.  Well written little vignettes.

Letting Go by inell, R:  She wishes that he'd occasionally take the initiative. 

Primal by poetics124, NC-17:  When Commander Spock and Cadet Uhura travel to a unexplored planet to find new Federation technology the planet begins to awaken Spock's primal urges.  Ponn Farr, rough sex.



So Spock/Uhura quickly lead to Spock/Uhura/Kirk because really, who wouldn't want to read that?

Rough Estimate by heather, NC-17:  Uhura and Spock estimate the length of time they have in the turbolift before someone finds them. Kirk as the voyur, Spock talking all logical and technical.  Really hot.

Realizations by meri, NC-17:  Uhura and Spock realize that they both want Kirk, and proposition him.  Kirk is all grown up here, and it's an interesting change.

Not in the stars, but in ourselves by wintercreek, NC-17:  Pon farr fic. Jim's not sure why his door chime is ringing at this hour, but it must be important.  This one includes bonding between all three, and I totally love that.

My Brain Comes In Porn by ninhursag, NC-17:  Classic h/c where all three are trapped on a snowy planet and must huddle together for warmth. And, like, Kirk's right there, and all twitchy and angry and bouncing off the walls. And Uhura's the calm, collected one (Spock just pretends to be) and realizes that he seriously needs someone to bring him to heel or he'll throw himself off one cliff too many and no one will be there to catch him.  Angsty, with Dom/Sub themes.  Links to sequels after fic.  God, Kirk is such a beautiful, angsty sub it's incredible.


Kirk/Spock is the original slash pairing, so of course I had to check it out.  That and the fact that while watching the movie (all three times) I kept thinking "The slash that comes off this is going to be incredible!!  I haven't been let down.

Poker Face by talitha78, vid:  So this actually got the K/S party started for me.  It's chock full of the subtle glances, the fighting and the outright stares that make K/S so believable.  Loads of fun.

Don't Stop Believing by arefadedaway, vid:  Fun, squeeable vid about Spock being a small town girl living in a lonely world and Kirk being a city boy taking the midnight train going anywhere.  Makes fantastic use of Chris Pine's expressions.

Of Convenience by Annenberg:  Kirk has to get married in order to keep the Enterprise, and Spock is the logical answer.  They both try to keep from the other the fact that they are interested in more than just being friends.  Long, posted at st_xi_kink , the Kink Meme of Awesomness.

Stars Apart, Shine The Same by sineala, R:  It is the third mission of his command, and Captain James T. Kirk suspects he is going insane.  The results of his mind meld with Spock Prime.  Incorporates memories Kirk got from Spock Prime, really well written.

Tremors by corpus_invictus, R:  Love and sex in the shower, plus an absolutely amazing mind meld.  Mind Melds are one of my big kinks with Spock, and this one is so, so good.

Obscenities by corpus_invictus, NC-17:  Kirk overhears Spock cursing at the computer and becomes obsessed.

Instructions by cards_slash, NC-17:  Spock has never given a blowjob before, so Kirk has to talk him through it. Very Hot.

"Kinky" by cards_slash, NC-17:  Kirk riding Spock while he recites regulations, very hot.



K/S quickly evolved into Kirk/Spock/Bones, of course, and I found my OT3.  God I love the three of them together, it's like they are all three home together.  Or maybe I just love how cards_slash writes them ;)

Willing and How We Found Ourselves by cards_slash, NC-17:  Spock goes into Ponn Farr while the three of them are crashed on a deserted planet and has no choice but to bond with one of them.  But he can't choose, so he picks both.  And thus the relationship is born.  The beauty of these fics is in the relationship (though the sex is awesome too).  Spock and Bones don't quite get along, despite being bonded, and Jim often acts as the go-between, smoothing things over and making everything better.  She's written Jim as deeply romantic, as well as sexual, and that is so appealing to me.  The long-term relationship she writes is deep and very fulfilling.

Whiskey and Chocolate by cards_slash, NC-17:  Established relationship Pon Farr right on schedule, they're all prepared with plomeek soup and space Gatorade and lube and 48 hours of leave.  There is bonding again, and the deep love that comes with a long-term relationship.

Fascinating by cards_slash, NC-17:  Kirk gets replicated in a transporter accident. One of him sexes up Spock while the other sexes up McCoy. A little later, the two halves merge and it leads to Spock/Kirk/McCoy.

Two Men and a Motorbike Series by inell, NC-17:  Kirk and Bones go beyond friendship after they return to Earth.  This one is the best K/M i've read.  It has rough sex, great kissing and some role playing.  It's long, angsty, romantic and a fantastic read.  The follow-up series is Two Men and a Starship. 

Playmates and Lovers Bring Me Closer by cards_slash, NC-17:  Kirk should be letting Bones study. Prompt includes a HOT gif of Karl Urban from Riddick, fic starts with kissing and is hot as hell.

Proper Motivation by florahart, NC-17:  Bones hustles Kirk at pool before pool-tabletop-sex occurs. Dominant Bones, subby Jim with a little bit of defiance.  Fucking fantastic.

Shiver by inell, NC-17:  Jim goes out to a masked costume party in search of a good time.

Unmasked by cards_slash, NC-17:  Kirk and McCoy are in the same place when Kirk is ~16. Underage!Kirk seduces McCoy.  Another masked party - these two make for great anonymousst_xi_kink!sex fics.

First Contact by florahart, NC-17:  A new planet is found and the people won't deal with Kirk until he is married. Thinking it won't matter once they leave the planet, Kirk chooses Bones, only to have the leaders say they have to consummate their marriage in front of everybody (crew, aliens, god).  This one has some funny parts that made me laugh out loud, but still hot.

Sooner or Later by flyingcarpet, R: The sooner and later of how they become more than friends, how Jim matures and Bones heals from his divorce.  Plays with flashbacks and memories.

Acts of Faith by flyingcarpet, R:  "This -- keeping his feelings to himself, which is where they belong -- would be a lot easier if Jim weren't so fucking smart." Kirk's emotional instinctiveness eventually figures Bones' attraction out.

It's a vid tribute to Yuletide, which is all about rare/ unusual fandoms and the "one night stand" nature of Yuletide.  I'm completely amazed by this vid, both intellectually and fannishly.  It totally provokes the glee I feel while watching or reading a particularly good work, or a fandom I love.  I love the flow from one scene to the next, especially the dancing scenes, the hugging and cheek touching. The song choice was good too, adding just enough sweetness and strength to tie everything together. The whips and licking and nekedness and kink made me squee loudly.  Much love for the fannishness of this vid, superb job editing so many sources together to create a cohesive point.  I haven't read much of Yuletide, but I'll have to remedy that.
